We've all had the thought. From the first time you pressed enter on a ChatGPT prompt, many of us have wondered—not if, but when—AI would replace us in the workforce. But rather than waiting for that future to unfold, how can we prepare for the realities of an AI-driven workforce and harness its potential? The good news is that people are actively working on solutions.

In October 2024, ResearchBuildConnect (RBC) was commissioned by Gary A. Bolles and Heidi C. Kleinmaus of Charrette LLC to support research implementation for the CareerzAI project. Funded by Google.org, this initiative aimed to provide a comprehensive analysis of the workforce development landscape, focusing on how AI is being integrated into key areas such as job matching, recruitment, career training, and apprenticeships.
RBC led a review of more than 550 service providers, spanning vocational training, job-search support, and career counseling. The research also included stakeholder interviews with industry leaders to assess the current adoption of AI, identify challenges, and explore opportunities for scaling AI-powered services.
The findings affirmed that thoughtful AI integration has the potential to democratize career support, enhance service provider efficiency, and improve employment outcomes—especially for underserved communities. While there is enthusiasm for AI’s potential, the findings also highlight concerns about uneven adoption across the field, the risk of reinforcing existing inequities, and the potential for job displacement. Looking ahead, the insights gained from this project lay the foundation for transformative advancements in workforce equity, inclusion, and access to opportunity.
